The Music Department at South Texas College offers many opportunities to hear, perform, and study music, both inside and outside the classroom.
Our concert calendar includes 30+ performances each semester. In addition to showcasing our student talent, we also regularly feature our nationally-recognized faculty artists and a wide variety of guest artists. Recent guest artists have included the Huntertones (a jazz ensemble from Brooklyn) and a private screening of Composed (a documentary about stage fright). All STC performances are free of charge and open to the public.
STC’s diverse array of ensembles allow musicians to develop their skills in a collaborative environment. Faculty members coach each ensemble through the rehearsal process and prepare them for regularly-scheduled public performances. Most ensembles include both registered students and community members.
For students majoring in something other than music, we offer a number of classes to promote a well-rounded education. Music Fundamentals is an elective that is ideal for those who do not have formal music training but would like to learn the basics, including how to read sheet music. For students who want an arts credit with direct applicability to contemporary music, American Music explores the history of popular music in America.
